March 5, Ash Wednesday

We begin our journey with a mark on our forehead. It draws questions and stares from strangers, coworkers and neighbors. In a way, this practice is embarrassing! But before you wipe off your ashes, recall that they symbolize our sinfulness. By wearing these ashes today, we publicly acknowledge our human imperfection. We recognize that we are sinful and that we can grow in our holiness. The realization of this is important; it is the impetus of our Lenten journey! After all, isn’t acknowledgement the first step in any process of healing or renewal?

What’s more, this mark on our forehead-this cross of ashes-calls us to walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. This simple dust reminds us of our common humanity and our need to work with and for those around us. As we embark on our Lenten journey, let us prepare ourselves to meet some of our brothers and sisters around the world: Michael and Yuvi, Timothy and Louisma, as well as a family in the Philippines and a community in New Mexico. What can we learn from these Stories of Hope.

So, embrace your ashes with humbleness. Find the room you have to grow in God. But do not let this day cause you to despair; rather, let it be your inspiration, your fuel for the 40-day journey ahead!
