We know how this story goes-a priest, a Levite and a Samaritan pass by a wounded man on the road, and only the latter stops to help him. They weren’t family; they weren’t friends; they weren’t even of the same community. But they shared a common humanity, so the Samaritan stopped to give of himself. Continue reading

Isaiah 50:4 reminds us that God gives us a “well-trained tongue” so that we “might know how to answer the weary a word that will waken them.” Do I listen to God’s Spirit within me? How does the Spirit motivate me and guide my words as I work for a more just world? Continue reading

By human standards, the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus are the ultimate failure. Members of the Jewish community had waited so long for the Messiah, had put their faith and hope in a man they believed had come to liberate them, and he died a horrific death. It was a devastating final moment, and many of Jesus’ friends had already fled the scene, abandoning hope for a better future. Continue reading

When we think of the goods the poor are stripped of daily, several key items come to mind: food, water and shelter among them. In reflecting on the Democratic Republic of Congo, we see a country rich in resources-and a people driven into poverty. How do we ensure that the wonders of the natural world are used in a sustainable, equitable way? Giving a man a fish, as the old adage goes, only solves the problem for the day. Continue reading

As Catholics, we go to God together. We’re all in this together-and the community we’ve built extends beyond time and space. God’s family extends beyond time and space, and we’re called as individuals to participate in that family, both in the daily realities in which we find ourselves and in that eternal reality to which God calls us. Continue reading

Reflecting on Today’s Readings God makes covenants with groups of people-entire communities-and he keeps his promises. What does this say about God? What does this say about how I should relate to God in community? Jesus recognizes that he has arrived at a difficult point in his life for the sake of glorifying God. He commits … Continue reading

Matthew 25 is a call to conversion-a call to leap forward with both feet, with charity and justice. We give of ourselves instinctually because we now see, with the eyes of Christ, those places where injustice prevails-and we commit ourselves to act. Continue reading
